India: Enhanced health-care can help HIV+ live longer

LUCKNOW- ON day two of the ISPEN-CON 2005, at the King George’s Medical University (KGMU), speakers stressed on the role of nutrition in patients needing critical care and treatment and those living with life-threatening diseases like HIV AIDS and Tuberculosis.
Addressing the convention, the chief medical superintendent of KGMU, Prof Ramakant, said improved health literacy in the HIV (+) affected people can enhance the survival ratio.
He said efforts should be made to reduce the stigma of the disease within healthcare settings, and added that priority should also be given to factors like prevention, disease management and treatment.
According to latest United nations estimates, around 3 million people will succumb to AIDS in 2005, on which Ramakant said the universal access to anti-retroviral drugs was clearly vital in the current scenario.
The registrar of British Nutrition Society, Jacqueline Landman, said there was a compelling need to give urgent attention to simple approaches like promoting food security and micronutrient provision to strenghten efforts for keeping HIV (+) people alive.
The president of ISPEN, Varsha, said when role of nutrition was a proven effective healthcare therapy, it was unethical not to give it adequate attention as nutrition minimises ill-effects of the disease.
She said it was high time that nutritional support was prioritised as integral part of any medical treatment.
The medical conference ends tomorrow.
